A Targeted Lift for Early Lower-Face Aging

If you’re noticing early signs of jowls, mild lower-face laxity, or seeking a subtle refresh after a previous facelift, our mini facelift in Newport Beach is an ideal solution.

This advanced SMAS-based procedure targets the lower face and jawline, delivering natural, long-lasting results without the same extent of surgery as a full facelift.

Unlike superficial techniques that only tighten the skin, Dr. Fink lifts and repositions the SMAS layer to enhance facial definition and restore youthful contours.

The mini facelift can be a powerful option for younger patients or those with minimal neck aging who want meaningful improvement with a more focused surgical approach.

  • Early jowls and mild lower-face sagging
  • Loss of jawline definition
  • Patients with limited neck aging
  • A subtle refresh after a previous facelift

Your Consultation

What to Expect During Your Mini Facelift Consultation

During your mini facelift consultation in Newport Beach, we’ll begin by discussing what prompted you to consider this procedure, whether it’s early jowls, lower-face sagging, or a desire for a post-facelift refresh.

Using my Anatomy of Aging, I’ll share how four layers of your face—visible skin, fat compartments, muscles, and bone—all contribute to how your face ages. A split image of skin and bone structure illustrates how the SMAS layer affects your appearance, and I’ll connect this to the mini facelift’s targeted lifting technique.

We’ll review where I’ll place the shorter incisions along your temple hairline and ear creases, review before-and-after case examples, and discuss the entire 90-minute procedure in detail.

Lastly, we’ll discuss the anesthesia options available, including local anesthesia with sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia.

This education ensures your questions align with our goals for a natural, refreshed outcome. You’ll have space to share your concerns, and we’ll create a personalized plan while exploring complementary options when needed.

Preoperative Preparation

Preparing for Your Mini Facelift

The second appointment we’ll have is your preoperative appointment. It lasts about an hour and takes place approximately two weeks before your mini facelift.

During this appointment, we’ll review the procedure again, discuss specific risks, complete consent forms, conduct a physical exam, and address medical concerns and existing medications such as diabetes or blood-pressure treatment. Lab work may be ordered when needed.

We take photographs, prescribe medications, and collect payment, while a nurse provides written postoperative care instructions. This helps ensure you are prepared without last-minute pharmacy visits.

On the day of surgery, you’ll bring your prescribed medications, which we administer upon check-in. As they take effect, I’ll review the surgery again, mark the treatment areas, and may supplement oral sedation with an intramuscular injection for comfort during numbing.

When local anesthesia is used, you can usually go home promptly after surgery while fully awake.

Surgical Walkthrough

How Mini Facelift Surgery Is Performed

Mini facelift surgery usually lasts approximately 90 minutes, although some procedures—particularly for men with larger tissue areas—may take up to two hours.

1
Anesthesia

Numbing or sedation is tailored to your preference and medical needs.

2
Incisions

Shorter incisions follow the temple hairline and natural ear creases.

3
SMAS Lift

The lower-face support layer and selected fat compartments are repositioned.

4
Refinement

Skin is redraped and the incisions are carefully closed.

Incisions trace the temple hairline, follow natural ear creases, and extend slightly along the hairline, allowing the skin to be elevated.

I lift and tighten the SMAS layer in the lower face, repositioning fat compartments for a natural, defined contour.

Minimal neck muscle tightening may be included, but we avoid addressing the neck’s central structures, making this procedure more appropriate for patients who are already satisfied with much of their neck appearance.

SmartLipo may be used in selected cases to support skin tightening, collagen stimulation, and jawline definition.

Every step is customized to your facial anatomy, with the goal of creating a refreshed and authentic look through the least extensive procedure that can appropriately address your concerns.

Shorter Incisions

Incisions are placed along the temple hairline and natural ear creases to support a focused lower-face lift.

Deeper Support

The SMAS layer is lifted rather than relying on excessive skin tension to create the result.

Limited Neck Treatment

The procedure is best suited to patients with minimal central neck aging or those satisfied with much of their neck contour.

Recovery Process

Recovery After Mini Facelift Surgery

Recovery focuses on allowing the incisions to heal and strengthen. Stitches are removed after approximately one week to help avoid visible marks, although activity restrictions continue for two to three weeks.

I will advise you to avoid lifting anything over 10–15 pounds and avoid activities that significantly elevate your heart rate, including hills, stairs, and biking, to reduce the risk of bleeding or hematoma.

Starting approximately two weeks before surgery, you’ll stop selected blood-thinning medications and supplements according to medical instructions.

After surgery, icing and tranexamic-acid treatment may be used to reduce bruising. Bruising can last one to three weeks, while swelling usually improves over one to two weeks.

Many patients feel presentable in public within approximately two weeks. About 80% of the result may be visible within one to three months, with final definition continuing to develop.

Day 1

Wound-Care Visit

We teach twice-daily incision cleaning and ointment application and review your early recovery.

Day 3

Early Suture Removal When Needed

Selected sutures may be removed and the healing process is checked.

Days 7–8

Remaining Incision Sutures

Additional sutures are removed and incision care is updated.

2–3 Weeks

Increasingly Presentable

Bruising and swelling are usually substantially improved, but strenuous activity remains restricted.

1 Month

Photography and Progress Review

We review healing and take postoperative photographs.

3–12 Months

Optional Long-Term Follow-Up

Additional visits may be scheduled at three, six, or twelve months according to your needs.

Natural Results

Achieving Natural Mini Facelift Results

I tailor your mini facelift to your unique features, including your preferences for jawline and neck contour, so the result feels authentic and refreshed.

Recovery is a partnership. Your commitment to avoiding direct sun exposure and following our detailed postoperative care, combined with precise SMAS tightening and tissue positioning, helps minimize scars and supports proper healing.

To maintain natural facelift results as aging continues, I may recommend nonsurgical options such as dermal fillers for selected volume loss, Botox and neurotoxins for expression lines, or laser and skin treatments for skin quality.

Common Questions

Mini Facelift FAQs

Will my face look tight and unnatural after a mini facelift?
One of the most noticeable and unnatural signs of facial surgery is an overly tight or stretched appearance. Dr. Fink shifts the deeper tissues without relying on excessive skin tension, using the SMAS layer to remove slack and redrape the skin naturally. During your consultation, you can review relevant patient examples in detail.
How long will my mini facelift results last?
Longevity depends on age, genetics, weight stability, sun exposure, nutrition, exercise, alcohol and nicotine use, and the natural aging process. The procedure cannot stop aging, but it can create a lasting improvement compared with how the face would have aged without surgery.
When can I return to a somewhat normal routine?
Bruising and swelling usually improve during the first three weeks, and many patients feel presentable within approximately two weeks. Heavy lifting and heart-rate-raising activities should be avoided for the first three weeks. Light routines may resume earlier with approval, while fuller activity often resumes after approximately four weeks.
What will I look like during recovery?
Bruising and swelling are expected and usually improve substantially during the first two to three weeks. Many patients feel comfortable being seen publicly within approximately two weeks. Healing varies, and your appearance will continue refining over the following months.
Who is not a good candidate for a mini facelift?
Suitability depends on medical history, lifestyle, anatomy, and expectations. Poorly controlled diabetes or high blood pressure, recent organ transplant, active smoking, significant medical risk, or unrealistic goals may make surgery inappropriate or require postponement and medical optimization.
Will you keep in contact with me after surgery?
Yes. You and the Newport Faces team will have scheduled follow-up beginning on day one for wound care, around day three for selected suture removal, and around day seven for additional suture removal. A one-month visit includes photographs, and optional visits may be scheduled at three, six, or twelve months.
What anesthesia options are available?
Anesthesia is discussed during your consultation and preoperative appointment. Options may include local anesthesia with sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia. The plan is selected according to safety, the procedure, and your comfort preferences.
Who is an ideal candidate for a mini facelift?
Adults—often in their 30s to 50s—with early jowls, mild lower-face laxity, limited central neck concerns, good health, and realistic goals may be candidates. The procedure may also be considered for a focused refresh after a previous facelift.
Does Newport Faces offer financing?
Yes. Available financing and payment options can be discussed during your consultation.
